Academic mentor program


















Learn more about how the Community-Academic Scholars Initiative may be able to support your community-based research project. During the week summer program, Community-Academic Scholars work with academic and community mentors to complete a research project that addresses health, poverty, or social inequity.

A limited number of eligible projects will be matched with an undergrad scholar whose interests, experience, and abilities best fit the project. This info session covered program benefits, project selection, and reflections from past participants. Preference will be given to projects that allow undergraduate scholars to directly interact in-person or virtually with individuals served by the community partner.

CST on January 9, Apply now. What are the review criteria for project submissions? What constitutes a community partner for the purposes of this program? Community organizations must be non-profits or NGOs, and may include health agencies, summer programs for children, schools or school districts, park districts, and other organizations serving special populations. You can use our Training Programme to hire high-quality trainees to start in September.

Your contract will continue to its end date as planned, including any extension to 31 August if you have previously agreed to this. We have contacted your school to confirm this and advise them on how to find out the arrangements for continuing to use the programme next year through the new provider. In addition, matches coordinate meetings on their own. The anticipated time commitment is approximately hours per month. I learned so much as a mentor, it really felt like a peer-to-peer effort of collaborative support! Mentors are always needed! ASMC provides mentors with resources to support your service. People who make good mentors have three or more years of experience at UW-Madison, spot the potential in others, are resourceful guides, display patience and tolerance, give encouragement, and see the big picture in situations.

Unsure if you are ready to serve as a mentor? Complete the Mentor Readiness Assessment. It was also great to have a neutral space to discuss sensitive issues. Also, my mentee had a different cultural background, and it was a great opportunity to for me to explore my assumptions and to help reinforce that my perspective on issues and experiences is not universal among my peers. Overall, it was a great opportunity, and very flexible so we could make the relationship something that worked well for both of us.

UW-Madison academic staff members with one year of employment at UW-Madison are eligible to request a mentor.
