A clear picture is a clear picture and I could care le ss about all the bells and whistles found on a Blu-Ray disk.
What I really want is a good quality viewing experience; and a good movie to go along with it. But what I found is that every two months or so I had to get some kind of up-grade or it wouldn't play some of the Netflix movies I'd rented.
I used my Square Trade warranty and junked it and bought the Sony. It's also a slow loader but, so far, plays all the Blu-Ray disks Netflix has sent. I'm still not impressed with Blu-Ray to the extent the promoters of "what's hot" seem to insist I should be, but at least the Sony hasn't been a problem. I'd certainly recommend it over an LG, but I've got fairly limited experience with these players having only owned two.
What I would say to any shopper is, if you want a good, clear picture viewing experience and don't want to spend more than you have to, get a standard "up-scaling" DVD player and it will do the job just as well as an overpriced Blu-Ray player.
This will work until the day the only format available is Blu-Ray of course. I have a home theater with a p projector and a i Rear projection TV. After the war between HD and Blu Ray ended, now is the time to start buying from the winner. So now that there is one format the cost should be going down. The picture quality on the Sony Blu Ray player is Amazing. If you have not seen a full p picture, go to your local electronics story and see what you are missing.
The only down side I see now is the slow loading time. It takes at least 1 minute for the player to get ready, and once you insert a disc it takes a couple of minutes at least before your disc is ready for you to access it. But the picture in full p is worth the wait. We bought this to go with our HD plasma TV.
Both Blu-Ray and standard DVDs look great and it's been wonderful to see some of our favorites in high definition. The machine does have one weird quirk: i t seems to take an unusually long time to get ready to play the discs, unlike our standard DVD player also a Sony , which was pretty much ready to go as soon as the disc slid into the machine. A small annoyance compared to the quality of the picture and the very reasonable price we paid but worth mentioning.
A great Blu-Ray player that can present in only the Sony way - high definition. While others have tried to copy Sony over the years, the Blu-Ray line has been tremendously awesome! Plus this u nit can upscale the standard DVD and create a better than the original DVD version with clearer picture and larger frame.
The best part: ease of updating system firmware. Sony's easy to use website makes it easy to upgrade to the latest firmware using a small download and easy to burn instructions.
Other competitors can not match this and often fail or not make it easy for the consumer. Sony made it easy with step by step instructions on how to create a firmware upgrade CD from your computer. For the money, can't be beat! Go with Sony Blu-ray! This is my second review, a follow-up if you wish.
